1. Formaldehyde

An important precursor to many chemical compounds, especially for polymers. Almost all furniture in South Africa are sprayed with acid-catalysed lacquers which release large amounts, way above the accepted minimum levels according to European legislation. In addition do most superwood and chip boards release large amounts of  formaldehyde for all their lifespan.
Formaldehyde is a well known cancerogen for decades.

2. Glycols

Added as a emulsifying and film forming additives to water-based lacquers but are also part of solvent based lacquers. Many a glycols are known to cause allergies, kidney problems whereas others may cause birth defects or interfere with blood dells

3. Aromatic Solvents

Found is lacquers and thinners alike. Known cancerogenic compounds which are slowly released from lacquered surfaces for years after the coatings have been applied.

4. Plastizisers

Found in all plastics i.e. wall-to-wall carpets, lacquers, plastic food containers, foil, air fresheners and perfumes…. the list is endless. Only released very, very slowly their go about becoming not plasticizers but endocrine disruptors which means they interfere with our hormone system and may cause birth defects.
