For all lovers of whole food and whole grains:
Sorghum – ancient african gluten-free super grain
If you have never heard of Sorghum, you probably belong to the majority of health food lovers in South Africa.
Everybody knows Buckwheat, Quinoa or Millet as healthy and gluten free whole grains, but what about Sorghum?
Why this indigenous, drought resistant and healthy grain is widely ignored as human food amongst South Africa’s white population is not quite clear – it may be associated with feed for animals or staple for impoverished african people or simply just with brewing beer!
It is time to overcome this inhibiting mindset and wake up to the fact that we are blessed with an ancient african grain which was apparently grown 3000 B.C. in Egypt, originated in Africa and is more drought resistant than Maize besides being healthier.
Research indicates that Sorghum is very high in antioxidants, inhibits human cancer cell growth, lowers cholesterol, protects against diabetes and is a safe staple diet for people with gluten intolerance.
Natural Living has made it it’s mission to promote Sorghum as affordable health food in any way possible and we are offering red and white Sorghum grains in 500g and 1kg quantities for whole sale and retail.
Sorghum grain is cooked like any other whole grain – for best results soak overnight and boil on low heat for 30-45 min or until soft. (to save energy use a hotbox or wrap your pot in a blanket after boiling for only 5-10 min – after 1 hour you will have the same result of a soft and delicious and tasty food).
Cook quite a lot in one batch and then store in the fridge (lasts for 3-4 days) and use as needed. Great for stir fries, sprinkle over salads, use in hamburger paddies, as breakfast cereal with yoghurt or cream…..
The whole grain can be ground into flour and used in gluten-free pancakes or flat breads together with maize starch (to make dough less crumbly).
Sorghum can also be popped like corn and tastes delicious.
